Another remarkable year for Telkomsel with an achievement in maintaining its market share as the leader under very dynamic market conditions, marked by fierce competition and new interconnection tariffs by the Regulator.

In February, Telkomsel reached 50 million customers, consolidating its position as a trusted cellular operator in Indonesia. An application called "M-Komik" also launched in this month. By easy procedure and reasonable price, customers are able to enjoy reading comics through their mobile phones.

On April 1, Telkomsel introduced a new tariff structure for both postpaid and prepaid products. This is to comply with the new regulation on retail tariff structure as a result of the implementation of the new interconnection tariff.

Telkomsel introduced BlackBerry® Internet Service (BIS) for its prepaid users in May. The first prepaid BlackBerry® internet service in Asia with self provisioning method (SMS activation), in cooperation with Research In Motion (RIM).

Telkomsel launched Telkomsel Merah Putih (TMP) iin June which stands for Telkomsel MEnembus daeRAH Pedesaan, indUstri TerpencIl dan baHari, a coverage expansion program dedicated to providing service coverage in previously isolated regions.

simPATI Kangen for Indonesian workers in Macau was launched in September. A prepaid cellular communication solution dedicated to Indonesian workers working abroad. Telkomsel also launched T-Remittance for Indonesian workers in Hongkong. An innovation that allows Indonesian overseas workers to transfer money from abroad through their cellular phones.

In October, Telkomsel deployed country border networks in remote areas along the borders with Papua New Guinea and Timor Leste.

In December, Telkomsel became the first in Asia to deploy an eco-friendly power supply system by installing hydro fuel cell at a site in Medan. As part of Telkomsel’s overall eco-friendly effort, an initiative to find alternative energy for network operation was deploy by exploring  the application of solar cell, fuel cell, wind turbine and micro-hydro power systems.

Under the fierce competition in the industry, Telkomsel continued to introduce a new simPATI PeDe tariff plan and a new Talk Mania program.

At the end of 2008, Telkomsel reached 65.3 million subscribers

Telkomsel welcomes the year with its penetration strategy accross Indonesia and laid down the foundations to lead the way in the emergence of the so-called New Wave mobile telecommunications services in Indonesia.

In March, Telkomsel launched HALOhybrid (a new monthly plan of kartuHALO), offering customers the convenience of a postpaid card with the flexibility of a prepaid card. In the following month, an HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) service called "Telkomsel FLASH" were launched.

In May, Telkomsel introduced "Telkomsel Pelindung Dataku" to provide back-up protection of all customers’ data bases. In the same month, Telkomsel also launched simPATI "Pake Banyak Gratis Pake Banyak" program. A customer retention program that provides free bonuses on every minimum three-minutes calls or six text messages during peak time (07.00-20.00).  

In June, launching of the innovative "Telkomsel You’ve Got Mail" as the first push-email service in Indonesia, capable of accessing up to five e-mail accounts.

Launching of "simPATI TalkMania" in September. Promotion for simPATI customers to make unrestricted phone calls, between 07.00-22.00, to all Telkomsel subscribers with a rate of only Rp 25,000 per day.

In November, Telkomsel launched T-CASH service that allowing Telkomsel customers to carry out financial transaction on their mobile phone. In December, Telkomsel launched "simPATI PeDe" that offers a simpler and more competitive tariff scheme of Rp 0.5 per second after 1st minute onwards for all Telkomsel users.

By the year-end of 2007, Telkomsel served for more than 47 million customers.

Telkomsel started the year in full force by launching a number of new initiatives, including a Credit Transfer feature for Kartu As, a new simPATI starter pack offer branded "simPATI JITU" and the introduction of an additional hour of special flat off peak tariffs for simPATI of Rp. 300/30 seconds for calls on net between 22:00 and 23:00.

In February Telkomsel launched its latest customer reward program called TELKOMSELpoin. This point reward program is open to all Telkomsel customers, and awards points to customers based on usage and loyalty. These points can be exchanged for direct rewards or lucky draw numbers.

In the same month, Telkomsel hooked up with Indonesia’s most popular rock band SLANK and launched a special Kartu As SLANK product for the huge SLANKERS community throughout Indonesia.

By the end of the first quarter of 2006, Telkomsel had close to 27 million active subscribers.

Telkomsel received a number of awards early 2006, including the Best GSM Operator of The Year, Best Innovative Products, Best Multimedia Services, the Best Indonesian Telecommunications Call Center, and the Indonesian Customer Loyalty Award.

Telkomsel launched Indonesia’s first flat-tariff per-second prepaid charging scheme on its Kartu As product in April 2006. All other prepaid products use a per-30-seconds round-up tariff.

In June a new addition was launched to the 3 existing HALObebas tariff plans for kartuHALO, called: "HALObebas Bicara". This package offers nationwide flat-rate, easy to understand on-net tariffs with the country’s longest off-peak period.

In February, Telkomsel’s Call Center received ISO 9001:2000 certification.

In the same month, Telkomsel launched an innovative new tariff scheme for its simPATI segment: Special flat on-net off-peak tariffs. All calls from simPATI customers to any Telkomsel number nationwide between 23:00 and 07:00 only cost Rp. 150 / 30 seconds. This move to both utilize available network capacity and stimulate sales and usage, proved to be very successful.

In March Telkomsel had more than 12 million simPATI customers and in April 5 million Kartu As users.

At the end of the first quarter of 2005 Telkomsel had more than 17.8 million active customers.

On 1 March Kiskenda Suriahardja replaced Bajoe Narbito as Telkomsel's President Director.

In April 2005 Telkomsel and Telkom together launched HALOventus, a push-email service on Telkomsel’s kartuHALO product offering.

On its 10th anniversary on 26 May 2005, Telkomsel again made history by becoming the first operator to successfully trial and showcase 3G services in Indonesia.

In June, Telkomsel and Bank Mandiri launched m-ATM services, another industry first.

To further fulfill customer requirements, Telkomsel decided in August 2005 to extend Free Domestic Roaming to all of its postpaid kartuHALO customers, thereby completing this service to all of its customers.

As part of its commitment to the mobile data industry, Telkomsel (together with Bridge Mobile Alliance) launched World Cyber Games Mobile in October 2005 – the first in Asia; with Indonesian participants (Telkomsel customers) subsequently going on to become the Asia-Pacific champions and world runners-up of these games.

In December Telkomsel was awarded the Best Innovation Award by the Indonesian Ministry of Research & Technology for its "Nada Sambung Pribadi (NSP1212)" ring back tone service.

In the same month, Telkomsel and Citibank launched a co-branded credit card bundled package, providing several exclusive benefits to kartuHALO customers using this special credit card.

Telkomsel ended the year with 24.3 million active customers.

Telkomsel passed the 10 million customer mark in February, followed in April by 11 million and 12 million in June. The company ended the year with 16.3 million customers.

Telkomsel was the first Indonesian operator to introduce EDGE high-speed data transmission technology to the Indonesian market, in February 2004.

Also in February, Telkomsel installed its 5000th BTS.

In March, Telkomsel launched new innovative and very successful price plans for its postpaid service kartuHALO under the brand name HALObebas .

In May, Telkomsel launched a new prepaid product under the brand name kartuAs (Ace Card) targeted at penetrating the lower-income segments of the market.

In June Telkomsel further innovated prepaid recharge distribution methods by launching M-KIOS, used by dealers throughout the country to recharge customers' prepaid cards automatically through secure mobile-to-mobile transmissions, thus rapidly expanding Telkomsel's prepaid credit distribution network.

In August Telkomsel was the first Indonesian operator to launch Ring Back Tone services under the brand name "Nada Sambung Pribadi Telkomsel" using original content from original artists.

In November Telkomsel and six other Asia Pacific operators (Bharti India, Globe Philipines, Maxis Malaysia, Optus Australia, Singtel Singapore, and TCC Taiwan) signed a joint venture agreement to form Bridge Mobile, a regional mobile alliance aimed at providing additional benefits to the region's mobile subscribers.

In December Telkomsel launched another industry first with its Mobile Message Board.

In February, Telkomsel was the first Indonesian operator to commercially launch international roaming services for its prepaid customers.

In May, Telkomsel exceeded the 7 million customer mark, followed in July by the 8 millionth, and in October the 9 millionth.

SingTel purchased an additional 12.72% from Telkom to increase its shareholding of Telkomsel to 35%. Telkom retains the remaining 65%.

Telkomsel completed a successful US$ 150 million Bonds Issue which was several times oversubscribed with mostly international investors, awarded by Asia Money Magazine with the Non-Investment grade Bond Award for 2002.

Telkomsel launched its integrated personal mobile data service, followed by the launch of the higher-speed data bearer GPRS (General Packet Radio Services) and MMS (Multimedia Messaging Services).

In May Telkomsel welcomed its 4 millionth customer followed in October by the 5 millionth and in December by the 6 millionth.

Telkomsel secured a USD/ EUR 147 million multi-currency, multi-agency facility.

Telkom bought Indosat's 35% stake in Telkomsel to own 77.72% in the company.

SingTel acquired KPN's 22.28% stake for US$ 602 million.

Telkomsel exceeds 3 million subscribers.

At the start of 1998, Telkomsel became the number 1 mobile operator in Indonesia in terms of size / customer base.

Telkomsel installed its 1000th Base Transceiver Station (BTS).

Telkomsel achieved nationwide coverage providing coverage in all of Indonesia's 27 provinces.

Telkomsel is the first operator in Asia and amongst the first in the world to introduce prepaid rechargeable GSM services.

KPN invested US$ 333 million to aquire a 17.28% stake in Telkomsel while a local company Setdco Megacell Asia acquired 5%. At the same time PT. Telkom also purchased additional new shares. The resulting shareholding structure after the transactions was PT Telkom 42.72%, PT Indosat 35%, KPN 17.28%, and Setdco 5%.

Telkomsel officially began operations as a company on 26 May 1995. Shareholders were PT Telkom (51%) and PT Indosat (49%).
